John Duarte: a family legacy • John W. Duarte (1919–2004) was an English guitarist, composer, editor, and writer whose career uniquely bridged science and music. Trained as a chemist, he turned to music full-time in 1969, largely self-taught beyond early jazz guitar studies. A close associate of Andrés Segovia, Ida Presti, and John Williams, Duarte composed over 150 works for guitar and lute, notable for their stylistic breadth. He was also a prolific arranger, educator, critic, and liner-note author, contributing extensively to major music publications and Grammy-winning recordings.
